Visual Disturbances & Migraine Auras
SEEING ZIGZAGS, FLASHES, OR BLIND SPOTS BEFORE A HEADACHE?
At National Headache Institute, when patients describe seeing shimmering lights, jagged lines, blind spots, or blurred vision before or during a headache, we begin evaluating them for migraine with visual aura — one of the most common, and most visually distinct, migraine symptoms.

What Visual Artifacts can look like
Patients describe visual artifacts in many ways: shimmering or flashing lights, jagged zigzag lines that expand across the field of vision, blind spots (scotomas), tunnel vision, blurred or wavy vision, or brief flickering “static.” These visual changes typically build gradually over 5 to 20 minutes and usually resolve within an hour, often just before headache pain begins.
This pattern is known as migraine aura, and it’s one of the clearest signals that a headache is migraine-related rather than a tension or sinus headache.
Why Visual Disturbances happen with migraines
Visual aura is believed to result from a wave of altered nerve activity moving across the visual processing centers of the brain. While the exact mechanism differs from patient to patient, visual artifacts are consistently one of the strongest indicators of a true migraine disorder — as opposed to other types of headache.
Recognizing this pattern matters because migraines with aura often respond differently to treatment than migraines without aura, or than other headache types entirely.
Getting to the Root of Your Visual Symptoms
Rather than simply prescribing medication to blunt migraine attacks after visual symptoms appear, we work to identify what’s triggering the underlying migraine pattern and build a customized, drug-free treatment plan around it.
